David is of course a wonderful example here for us of being merciful even when we are within our rights. Keep in mind that what David's companions said was true, God had promised to deliver David's enemies into his hand. David would have even been doing the "right" thing by killing Saul and taking the kingship that God had given to him, but David decides that Saul's wickedness is for God to avenge. Even Saul, by the end of this chapter, recognizes David's love and mercy. Ironically it is that mercy that causes Saul to recognize David kingship. This is a radical departure from how kings show there right to the throne, through power and force. It reminds me of another whose display of glory also did not come in power and destruction, but in humility and self-sacrifice.

This chapter has a cat and mouse game going on between Saul and David. It can be entertaining to get caught up in the story itself, but hard to see connections between this story and the greater story of God's activity. God's preservation of David and David's practical exile from Israel is kind of foreshadowing of Israel's exile to Babylon. In both circumstances God preserves his people so that they can praise Him and speak of His mighty works to the world. This is also what God is doing for us as we await Christ's return and new creation. It can often feel like we're running scared, but in fact, God is moving us to His purposes and preserves us, so that we might speak of His mighty works to the world around us.

The first part and the last part of this chapter have very cool typology for Christ. "And everyone who was in distress, and everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was bitter in soul, gathered to him. And he became captain over them." & " Stay with me; do not be afraid, for he who seeks my life seeks your life. With me you shall be in safekeeping." All who are weary and burdened find rest in Jesus Christ, and in his presence our lives are restored now and in the resurrection. David is a type for us, pointing to the greater role of Jesus.

This story about David acting insane is very entertaining. He recognizes that this king sees him as the king of Israel and would probably take advantage of having him there. So David acts like a lunatic, a weakling so Achish won't want to keep him around. David certainly was a crazy character, as we'll see again later when he dances in front of the ark as it's brought back to Jerusalem.
